Actually… These are PCGS: 1918-D MS65 1917-D MS62 MS62! Is this just undergraded or am I crazy lol. Is it worth cracking out to try for a 63-64 grade? Or might it have a better shot with another TPG With the amount of talent and experience here, it seems odd that the guesses were so broad. I'm hoping that's an indication that the grade is wrong
But compare the reverses of both those coins (that's why I picked those two). Is there really a 3 grade difference?
I don't think the 18-D deserved the 65 and I really don't think the 17-D only deserved a 62. With that strike, a 63 would not have shocked me, but a 62. Here is a weak strike 62;
I would say the 18-D is slightly overgraded. I just sent an 18-D 65 to robec for images when I get them I will post for comparison. Any chance there are luster breaks on the 17-D? Market graded maybe. If not then at least a 63 the stikes are not great for this year/mint and nice even color is tough. Here is a 1911 with no luster breaks which went 62. I cracked it and placed it in my album for now Here is a 17-D with nice strike and color, but muted luster. I would say it should have been 64 maybe a + wish I had pro pics
