Just wondering if anyone wants to hazard a guess.
I sent some coins to pcgs and got the grades and images back this weekend.
This one wasn't what I expected but maybe I should have, looking at the images.
    Thoughts on the grade?

Looks Gem to me, not exactly dull in any way.
Just not as blazing as an earlier strike might be.

    MS 64
...I tend to see many of these graded MS 65 or MS 66....yours has one somewhat bigger hit in the field below "San Diego" and some spotting but overall looks nice...I would have actually guessed 65 if not for the comment about the grade being unexpected

Gems are aloud a focal distraction IMO.

If you should have expected it because of the images, I'll guess UNC Details - Cleaned. If so, I would look carefully under high magnification and see if those hairlines are die polish and not cleaning. PCGS made that mistake with one of mine. Beautiful coin.

Since you say that the results were not quite what you expected, I’ll guess the slab grade is MS-64. These coins are mostly in the high grades. There are some thin lines on Ms. San Diego’s shins, bust line and neck. The luster also appears to be slightly muted.

I had such an experience with an Oregon Trail Half Dollar. It has virtually no marks, but the luster is not blazing, probably from a dip. It got an MS-64 from PCGS.

***Ding ding ding*** we have a winner.
I guess I maybe gave it away in my initial comment.
But yes, it's a beautiful coin, great luster.
I guess the hairlines in the field on the obverse and on the shield gave it a details/cleaned grade.
I think you might be right about the die polish lines.

It is most likely just me, but I don't think TPG give commemoratives a fair shake. I haven't looked at past graded ones, but it seems most get a MS65, unless they have really obvious signs of circulation.

I'm so rarely correct, I'm having a beer to celebrate. Having the cert# now and saving off the TV to zoom in on, I'd say there are lines on both sides that are clearly die polish, and others I'm unsure. On the reverse for example the ones under the date are clearly die polish. Field left of the tower, unknown. I don't know the value of these but it might be worth a second opinion.

As long as it is not too severe, then I agree.
My first thought was 65 on this but reading the original post made me think it went lower. I did not think it got a details grade though (TrueView photo did not suggest a cleaning to me).

Same here I thought die polish. But we don't have it in hand.

I see hairlines on reverse, through the mountains and shield and on the lower part of the gown. They seem to be in the fields and devices indicating they are not die polish lines.
