I have no idea on the O-number, but the coin looks like a VF/XF liner (TPG grade of 35 or 40).

    I'll say a low EF . I don't have the Overton book yet . Where's the denticles ?

I like the look too . At first I couldn't figure out what made it look different . Then I noticed , no denticles .

PS - Star 7 slender points and hollow center. I probably should have went with XF-40, but went with first reaction on seeing the coin.

I'll believe you, I feel that the 1834's along with the 1836 are the hardest to Overton.

    (To creat a new verb.)

Becareful - we all know I make mistakes. :) And yes there are several that are hard to attibute - I think I dislike 1827 the most.

I'm going to have to agree - 1827 is one of the hardest. 1834 isn't too bad, because there are so many subtypes. Anytime you can narrow it down to a subtype with only a few O#'s, it makes it much easier. Heck, that's about the only way I can do the 1806.

Isn't this also called Small Date , and letters . As it's different than my '34 which is the Large Date , Small Letters ?

Yep - small date and small letters. I think my last buy of bust halves was mainly because they had two examples side by side. It made it so easy to see the small and large date.

Yes, there are three main types for 1834 (at least on the NGC Registry) - Large Date, Large Letters; Large Date, Small Letters; and Small Date, Small Letters.

You are correct, this one is a Small Date, Small Letters. That should narrow it down for anyone else who wants to try attributing this one.

And the answer is: ANACS EF-45, O-112, R3. Mark H nailed it.

Next time post the TPG, and some more of us might "nail" it. ;)

    Congrats Mark!

That's funny. That thing won't be completed for many, many years.

A friend on the NGC forums pointed out that this has a nice "guido," which is apparently the term for when the coin is improperly fed through the edge lettering machine. It gets pinched, the edge letters get all screwed up, and you get the flattening at opposite points on the rim which you can see very clearly on the reverse of this one. The coin also goes slightly out of round, which this one is.

Has anyone else ever heard the term guido? A google search turned up precisely zero. Is it something people collect, or damage? Does it carry a premium?
