Got out my guessing wheel and through a dart. Looks like lots of luster with little detail on Lincoln. Are the strikes on the 27-s typically like this?

Like this. no. However, 27-S has its share of poor strikes and then some. San Francisco improved their quality DURING this year, not BEFORE.

I know what you mean , Usually I have a feeling what it will grade , but not on this one yet . I'm thinking '63 . I also wish those who picked Details would explain why as I don't see it getting a details grade at all .

I figure if that hit on Lincolns cheek couldn't be seen and got a 67 , this coin is either a 63 or 64 . I might just flip a coin . Time to check the archives at Heritage .

Aside from the obvious problem with the strike, this is actually a basically problem free coin. There are a couple spots that do not show up well ion the pictures for some reason, but it is pretty well nick free and actually has descent luster. Using the PCGS definitions, a 63 may have a "mediocre strike" while a 62 may have a "extremely poor strike", I guess I would have to agree with the 62 NGC gave this coin. This coins has enough going for it I would still tend to go with my gut and say 63. FWIW, it was also posted

Besides, if this is a 63, I think mine deserved at least the same. http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1139&lotNo=7398

Guessed 63 back then too , well at least I'm consistent . I better read my PCGS book again but I still like 63 for this coin .

Like I said before you reposted this one, I don't care what NGC says. I prefer to grade on hits and this coin barely has any. All the chatter is from the planchets, as struck, a 62 is plain wrong IMO. San Fran was still in the process of fixing their bad habits in 27....it is what it is and finding a red one is extremely difficult.
