I heard of people referring to some '55 coins as the poor mans doubled die , even though there is little or no doubling . Thought maybe this was one of the ones they were hawking .
So I'm trying to learn how to grade - so please indulge a complete novice for a moment. Would the bag marks/scratches on the face, and the long scratch above the E of "Cent" on the reverse bump this below 65? Also, if "One Cent" doubled on the Reverse, or is that just the way it was made? The Red Book has MS65 Gem as "...No trace of wear, barely noticeable blemished, nearly full color". Do these previously mentioned marks fall under the "barely noticeable" or not. Obviously the color on this is not an issue, nor is the wear...
No one is going to not indulge you. That is the reason I post these threads as well as for fun. Yes, that is a scratch above the E, but you need to put it in perspective. That coin is about 3/4 inch across. That image is 5 1/2 inches on my screen. That is 8X magnification. Graders typically use NO magnification or 5X to see items in question. Anyhow, stick around and see what you can learn. Look at some of the past threads and learn from them. That is what they are there for.
Thad pretty much nailed this one. A couple his and even a couple small spots (most notable is the one on the left wheat), but that luster is way off the charts. Technically, everyone got this one wrong. Maybe I missed something here. I can see how this got a 66, but they even gave it a 66+!
This is different of late. The only changes this week was petro89 and bahabully exchanged places and that is only because bahabully comes first alphabetically.
