It's been awhile since there was a "guess the grade" around here. Let's fix that. This GTG features three 1891-O Seated Liberty Dimes (none of which I own or have owned). Alert: one of these coins has a details grade. A) B) C)
I agree with Collecting Nut on all three, unless B got the "details" grade because of the scratch above the cap.
I did consider that. In the photo, which is the only thing we have to go by, it looks to me as if the surface has been slightly altered.
I will agree with the distinguished gentleman on the first 2, but I'll call the third one AU details. There appears to be some *minor* traces of flattening on the breast and thigh, and friction in the fields. Now, that may be due to the cleaning, not sure. The area radially from center to k7 through k9 looks polished. Maybe spot removed? The spot where the rock is closest to the rim, k8, looks to have a remnant spot. Not to mention the area around k1 around the cap looks similar. One of the other biggests problem on this coin is the reverse... what is going on here? It looks like heavy residue, but I can't tell if it is leftover cleaning products, contaminants, or what?
I grade the first coin as AU-58. It does have signs of a very faint cleaning but I woul straight grade it so hope the TPG would too. I place coin #2 at MS-62. It does not appear to have full luster but gets points for full detail. Coin #3 looks to be uncirculated but has suffered some kind of enviromental effect. you can see the haze floating on the surface but could have been from any of a number of things. I can't spot any hairlines so my guess would be chemical rather than mechanical; ie cleaning. Nice coins all in all. james
@masterswimmer . I make it a point to never look at other posts until after I have done my own thinking but i guess we sink or swim together on this one. james
