At first glance I thought it was a proof.

    Nice coin.

    65 PL

But the mirror surfaces are hard to judge from the photo.

Too bad for that nick in the steps, otherwise FS it is. Always seemed silly to me that a strike characteristic could be withheld because of a hit.

A lot of ticky-tacks in the fields, but I can believe a PL. I am torn between 64 & 65. Coin said 64.

Tough coin. I don't think NGC said PL, it looks like the fields are a little weak in some places, so I'll say semi-PL (close, but not enough for the designation). From the pics, the reverse looks like it has a lot of chatter, but I think that's just an artifact of the PL surfaces (and flow lines). I want to say 66, but I think with the big hit on the steps NGC said 65.

I would have voted 65* (if that was in the poll).

I'll say MS65PL.....only because I have looked at many PL coins in hand and yours is close to a MS65 maybe MS66.

is that action in the fields, especially the rev above the dome in the coin or the slab? Im on my laptop for a couple of days so hard to see that well.

OK, with that kind of action I would have a hard time seeing higher than 63, hard to say if it is PL or not, but I could see it, I'll be the first to vote 63PL

I would never grade it higher than 63, but that certainly is a well struck coin !

That thing has certainly been beaten to hell. Lots of marks.

I don't believe the coin received a PL designation, and I think NGC graded the coin at MS64.

I only wish that light blue toning on the periphery was more widespread!

Well the coin has semi-prooflike surfaces but the mirrors are not deep enough to qualify for a prooflike designation. That said, the semi-prooflike surfaces accentuate every little mark and hairline on the coin making them look worse than they are. For those that graded the coin MS63, the photos make the surfaces look worse than they really are in person. But how NGC graded this coin an MS66 is beyond me. There just isn't any other way to put it, NGC over-graded this coin. I grade the coin MS64 and could maybe accept it as a very low end MS65, but MS66, not a chance.

not to be a smart aleck, but I thought that the coin would be over graded at MS-63 (as low as the poll allowed)

Now, looking at the grade, it looks like a net grade (upward) coin to me.

PL surfaces, not quite PL enough to garner the label.

Amazing strike, but with a small hit on steps keeping it from an FS label.

A 65 net graded upward to a 66 is the only way I can explain this one.

Or maybe Paul's just right -- they blew it on this one.
