This might be the hardest coin I have ever graded (that's likely why there's a wide range of grades). MS62 RB

    Nice coin.

Looks really softly struck. If so how can you tell what was on the planchet, and which are hits? I chose 61. RLM educate me please this one is toughie. Also looks like some carbon spots were removed behind Abe's portrait.

Tough, tough coin to find in red! Very typical but rare with that red color. NICE!! PCGS might have shown their toughness with a 1 pt downgrade....but I stick to my grade.

There's a lot of Lincoln guys on CT that can educate you. :too-cool-for:

The 27-S is well known for horrible strikes - weak, mushy, over-used dies were the norm. The planchet quality was also generally poor, the reds coins are seldom attractive. Many people choose sharply struck AU coins over the MS grades, but they are also difficult to find. The most sharply struck examples I've seen are consistently in the lower grades.

When a Lincoln is so weakly struck, the imperfections on the planchet remain afterward since there wasn't enough pressure to smooth out the metal. It's very evident on the reverse of the coin, those are not hits. This coin is virtually hit-free.

    Hope this helps. :)

If you look at this overlay, you can figure out why the reverse looks the way it does. Notice how the weak areas on RLM's coin compare to the high-points/high-metal flow points on the obverse.

Hmm I'm going to say 63

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

Boy are people going to struggle on this one....

Clearly a RD coin. Can't be AU, or I'll eat it.

Rims say the coin is AT LEAST a 65.

Question is, how much to take off for the weak strike....

I'll guess the coin goes no higher than 64, and 63 is what my brain said to me upon opening the thread. That's my guess, and I'm sticking to it, but worry the coin graded 62.

Thanks for the lesson. Knowing the tpgs dont weigh strike as heavily as luster or eye appeal, untill gem I will change my guess to 64 .

I went with 63 - pure guess. Is this a typical type strike for this date?

Never mind - read some of the other posts after I posted. I like to attempt to grade before reading anything else.

Hideous strike, but clean surfaces and good color. I voted 62, but two points in either direction would not surprise me.

Wow, very hard for me but I'll shoot it a 62 RB with a weak obverse strike.
