Kind of a soft strike, but relatively mark free.

I am assuming all the scuffs on the coat are on the holder not the coin. I still have a tough time with jefferson nickels...It is a great looking coin, but I always undergrade these.

  10. I said MS64 due to slight marks on face, head, and Monticello. TC

First of all, I like the look of the coin. Color and luster look nice, if not spectacular (nice photo by the way, if it's yours). I voted MS66 because I think NGC would give it a 66. The weak reverse strike and one decent-sized mark on Tom's cheek do give me pause.

To further confuse things, if I was grading it (keeping in mind the little I know about grading Jeffs is from reading your threads), I would say MS65:thumb: and I predict Doug would say MS63;).

I wouldn't even try to guess what they said. But they should have said AU55.

Assuming the scratches are on the holder, MS66

So, is anyone wondering why I would have such a low graded coin in my collection?

    p.s. I guessed 65. 66 wouldn't surprise me.

Mean ? With all the wear on the collar, the shoulder, and the cheek - and more on the reverse - you think it's mean to be honest ?

    hamman88 Spare some change, sir?

I think those are areas showing the original condition of the planchet before striking.

Lincoln shoulder shows the same thing on weakly struck examples and is often confused for wear.

Sorry, but I most strongly disagree. That is wear.

I think there's some strike issues, it's a nice coin though. 65 and maybe a 64 due to some contact marks.
