Bought from the Reeded Edge table at the Richmond, Va. coin show last weekend. It's in a no-problems PCGS holder with an older green label (not a 'rattler,' though). I would also appreciate comments on strike and eye appeal as well. It's part of my set of early commemoratives that feature Virginians or a 'Virginia connection.' Thanks, have some fun!
Well, it's a great looking coin and hard to find much wrong with it. Love the color and the strike looks pretty solid although Lee's stars do not have great definition. I will guess MS66 but I could believe 67.
It's hard to say from a photo, even a good pic like that one. But I will say it's a terrific coin. :thumb: I love that subtle, champagne toning. Aw, what the heck... I'll say MS65.
I am leaning toward a MS64 on it. It is a great example of the Antietam Commemorative. I really like the civil war coins, let me know if you want to sell it.....LOL
It's a pcgs MS65. The other choice was an NGC MS66-- a bright white coin with fantastic luster. It was so white, I think it may have received a very careful dip. It just didn't "do" anything for me. The pcgs coin has great luster and a nice skin, as well as subtle toning. The only marks of note are the 2 'bullet holes' in McClellan's head, hidden in the hair.
I know what you mean. When I first started, I thought bright white coins were "the thing". In some cases, they are. But I prefer the subtlety of original surfaces, and most blast white coins aren't original.
