Here's a 1900 Lafayette Dollar that I scanned in and I was wondering what
you would say this grade is?

    Is it slabbed?

If not, not a guess the grade.

    No it's not slabbed.

Yeah, we can't really guess the grade if it hasn't been assigned one.

I will say though, unless that's a hair running across George Washington's head and not a scratch, you're definitely looking at a details coin. Hard to say with a scan, but I'm thinking AU details.

Yes, that would be a scratch, not a hair.

This coin looks like XF40, but the scratch would prevent me from buying it.

We can absolutely guess the grade without a slab. We just can't compare our guesses to any reference.

That being said, I'd call this EF details, scratched and polished.

Wow, I missed the polished part. Can you expound on that a little? What clued you in to it? I'm not seeing it.

The slight, hazy appearance, especially noticeable on back indicates some type of a touch up job.

    XF Details. Improperly cleaned

I am really only guessing based on the pictures, but: the very bright surfaces, which also appear rather smooth, tend to make me think its polished. Notice how it is a different color/texture around the lettering, and in the protected areas? That is where the original surfaces are left - the open fields have been polished, but they couldn't get into the crevices.

Scans totally throw me off but I think the coin is better than an XF.........low AU (50).
