Torn between 53/55 being branch mint gold and not being able to see luster in the picture. Guess I'll lean towards 55
Dahlonega mint gold is a true rarity. Most coins are in details grades, and even then they are very valuable. I would say 53.
I have a hard time discerning wear from weak strikes on these early half eagles. But I think by 1844 the Dahlonega coins were coming out with better strikes than the first few years (1840-43), so I'm going to guess that it's a combination of wear and strike - I think the wear around the corner of the cap - by the L in Liberty is telling - and that mean XF40 or 45 - as is this one.
