Okay guys here is a fun guess the grade thread. Instead of telling you which company graded the coin, I want you to guess both the grading company and the assigned grade. Please vote in the attached poll and leave your comments to explain your grading process in the comments. Good luck!
This won't be easy trying to guess the grading company, but I'll give it a shot. Strike: 65 (There are a lot of really well struck full step examples) Luster: 67 (I can see really nice luster in these images) Eye Appeal: 66 (There is a little blotchiness which is a little bit of a detractor, but the blue helps me see past it.) Surface Condition: 66 obverse 67 reverse Net to 66 Overall grade: 66 and I'm going to guess it was graded by NGC. Jefferson's are not my series and I may be under grading this a bit.
I'll go with PCGS 66+ (I think it would have had a star if in an NGC holder and that is not an option, so it must be a PCGS holder).
I threw down a PCGS MS 66. The two contact marks on Jefferson bother me but I have to remember these are large photos so I would not be surprised if it graded higher.
Pretty coin. I went with PCGS 66. I picked PCGS just because I think you use them more than NGC. I went with 66 just because it has that look. I started to vote 67 because of how clean the face looks. The Blue toning is really nice.
I'll be honest, trying to guess the assigned grade and grader is nearly impossible. I'll wager that the assigned grade is PCGS 67. However, I'll also give you the justification for my own grade (66+): Strike: 67+. The strike on this coin is quite strong, especially for the date. Luster: 67. I see flashy, bold luster in these pics. Eye appeal: 68. Blue is always attractive, and this is especially nice. The toning accentuates the design in a way that few do. Contact marks: 66. The reverse is flawless. There are some minor tickmarks, but nothing in that photo on the high points, but they are minor. There is one significantly distracting mark on his cheekbone. I'll be honest, that mark is what keeps it from a 67 in my opinion. Add all that up, and it leads me to a 66+
NGC..65..nice obv.definite dings...reverse..steps little worn. interuptions across...dome and upper finite scratches.. toning nice..
Nice luster and maybe the central design hits are show more in the large picture. I think the hits keep it from 66, but the luster makes it a + with the eye appeal. Just my nickel worth of opinion for the day.
Ok, this was a tricky guess the grade. Nobody really figured out what I was looking for, the coin was crossed from NGC to PCGS (not by me, I sold it as an NGC coin). Congrats to ToughCOINS who nailed the NGC grade of MS67.
Someone decided to cross this from the NGC old fatty and it ended up in a 1943-S Jefferson Nickel PCGS MS67+ This reinforces the trend that PCGS rewards light pastel toning with superior luster on well struck coins despite the presence of some light surface marks. Personally, I would rather see this coin in a straight MS67 holder with a star from NGC. A little shout out to Mikenoodle for getting the MS67+ grade.
