Got this at one of my local coin shops yesterday for $1. It's one of 2 in an NNC slab. What do you think is the grade on this one?
Wait a second - do other companies besides ICG actually grade these things? I know ICG grades about anything, probably because it can help keep their business open.
These are Bronze medals, right? I see a frosty surface, if these were struck from proof dies then probably 66. I don't think that it is wiped or circulated. Either way I would have bought it for a buck.
The “scratches” are marks that were probably on the planchet before the piece was struck. The quality of the dies that the mint made to strike these pieces varied from nice to wretched. The FDR medal was one of the worst. I only know this because I bought a set of these medals with an album from the mint over 20 years ago.
I figured it was an absurdly high grade. NNC is a basement slabber. I wouldn’t even be sure that it’s genuine.
