Once again time to play GTG However this time we are going to throw a curve ball and put up 4 Shield Nickels to GTG. One is a favorite of @SuperDave . Well one he would of like to borrowed for an extended amount of time.....no more than 50 years but no less than 49 .
In point of fact, I *would* like to borrow that one at some time for long enough to do an in-depth photographic study with some of the higher-level magnifications my equipment is capable of. I bet the result would make for a fun thread.
Actually, you know, tomorrow's my last day of work for 9 days.... I haven't taken a day off in 18 months aside for the Gettysburg show, and have to burn a *bunch* of hours. The weekend is gonna be for mil-spec cleaning, but I plan to spend the week with the camera rig anyway. I have an axial rig to build and test, and a few coins (some from you among them) to image. And I'll probably make 250 posts here in that time. The one we're talking about here looks to be on the AUish. Check this one out, upper half of the obverse: https://coins.ha.com/itm/shield-nic...-24008.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515
I'm am horrible with grading nickels. But that first 1869 is just sick!!! I'd love to get one of those. Did they have they guy punching in the date on the dies standing on a one legged stool or something? I mean dang!!!
I will probably fail miserably, but here goes: 1) AU58 2)AU details 3)XF45 4)AU50 Don't laugh, I have no idea what I'm doing. But when I go to purchase a shield or V Nick, I transform into SUPER PADDY, and I can grade like a college professor!!!
These things are a bear to grade because of the chances of a poor strike imitating wear. On the bright side, you have detailed stars and both horizontal and vertical shield stripes as indicators. These would be easy to grade if struck consistently. From these images, I'd generally characterize them as being in grade order from highest to lowest as posted, ranging from mid-AU to mid-XF (maybe 40). That's about as close as I can come with Shield Nickels, though.
This is my series. AU-53 - nice die cracks AU-50 - nice RPD XF-45 - nice RPD AU-50 - DDO I really haven't a clue what I am doing but I would like both of those 1869s in my type set. (1869)
It would be if this were baseball. And I waffled so hard I could claim to be almost completely right.
Well after the judges went over all the guesses this round has to go to Santinidollar ! Heavy you were pretty close but not giving an numerical grade on coin #2 you'll have to be the runner up. As runner up means that all others get to come over to your house and drink all your Miller's . However we rather have Corona. So be a lamb and run out and pick up like 5 cases.
