Please guess the grade (and use the poll) (note: I struggled to get the ideal photo, so I included two of the obverse). I didn't include it in the poll, but please also comment on if it received a star or not. And bonus guess: what else is special about the coin?
@ddddd What is that white spot (or lack of toning) on the obverse extending from the "S" to the bottom of her cap? Chris
I am not ashamed to give this a 67 grade from the pics provided. +/* are myth. Is that the largest cud in history???
It's an untoned area as far as I can tell. And @Johndoe2000$ no cud...that would have been pretty cool though!
I give it a MS 66*. Looks like a interior die break on the obverse. If those are scratches on the cheek I'd lower it to MS 64. (Can't see the scratches on the first photo).
I went 64. Those marks on her cheek are pretty severe, even though the rest of the coin is terrific. Definitely not 66 or higher, as some are saying. I don't think it got the star, with that awkward white area on the obverse.
It could well have gotten the star. I was on the fence about that. I went straight, solid 65, but the toning is really striking enough to go with the *. I would not be surprised with a 66 grade at all, which means that the “I hate TPGs” crowd would grade it as AU 55.
MS 64...to much chatter on cheek-my opinion of grade. NGC grade MS 65 no star. For the record, I posted MS 65 in the poll.
I was on the fence between MS64/65 regarding surfaces but thought that the overall eye appeal would push it up to MS65. The untoned area on the obverse is unusual but I don't think it is distracting enough to negate the star, though it only takes one grader to disagree and bam, goodbye star designation, so we will see.
