This is all about what you would grade the coin. I'll be posting 10 different Matte Proofs over the next week or two. They are all in early holders from the following services. NGC, PCGS, ANACS and PCI. I took these to the last Fun Show with two things in mind. I had Todd image them and was going to crack them all and hand them to PCGS for grading. After talking with a few friends at the show, I decided to wait on messing with a change in holder. Please let me know what you think about the image sizes. I had a hard time deciding what size was best for most. All opinions are welcome. Have fun.
I'm going to go with PR65, mostly because I like the looks of it so much. The spots are not nearly as distracting as they were with the last MPL.
A Lovely 1912 MPL. Very nice original skin and just a really solid example of the type. I like how this coin illustrates the effect of tissue toning, colorful stains or spots are common and while some may look at the slightest of toning spots found on MPLs or Matte Proof Buffaloes as negatives, they certainly do not bother me and if anything they serve as proof of the coin being in its original and unmolested state of preservation. This particular piece has a very handsome sunburst colored obverse and what I consider a nearly perfect reverse, nice even toning, super sharp strike, toning spots and all, its a winner in my book. Solid superb gem proof PR-66 RB IMHO....It also wouldn't surprise me if pcgs says PR-65 RB... either way a solid coin.
That's a good thought. They do great work. I would be kicking myself in the you know what if the toning got messed up.
I think this one would grade today at 65 RB. That's a nice jump in price even if it comes back as 65 BN. Would hate to loose the old holder but it may be worth the risk. Thoughts?
