This thread is actually meant to help hone my skills in grading, I am questioning whether on not this slab is correct. For ever in the back of my mind, Buy the coin and not the slab, Buy the coin, etc. Sometimes I get into a shop and the money is burning a whole in my pocket. Can't help but to buy the most affordable coin in there. In hand I think that the grade is correct. It's dark but a rosy red color.
Well, you certainly got the knack of the picture-taking down. Give her 62PL, with a caution: I'm feeling optimistic, tonight.
I took two more Photos. One with slab color as close to natural, I hope that means, that the white balance is correct. Here is what it looks like in Hand.
Your white balance looked fine to me. It was the exposure that was causing the white holder to go darker. But that is perfectly fine for that to happen, I have it happen all the time. What you want to watch out for is a color cast is the neutral white/gray holder. My guess is right in line with the others in here MS-62 with I think a decent shot at PL.
@green18 had it right. I didn't switch back to white, it's has been a bad habit, still learn the new lens.
Hmmm.. I loaded the images in the original post into Photoshop and they were as neutral as you can get for a color image. I was getting readings of 166, 167, 166 across the RGB channels with some readings of 166, 166, 166 and 167, 167, 167. What ever you did, you did it correctly.
Thank you for the advice, I have only been playing with the WB shift for a couple weeks, it's an interesting aspect.
Well, just for you'll I'll pull out the detailed breakdown: Strike: The strike on this piece looks quite full. It's an above average strike. 65. Luster: The luster appears full and strong. In hand, I'll bet it is quite flashy. This is due to the semi-prooflike fields (the coin does not make it to PL, in my evaluation of your pictures). 64 Eye Appeal: Unfortunately, that is secondary toning from an improperly rinsed dip, especially on the obverse. There is some widespread spotting on the reverse as well that hurts. The color here is a neutral-to-negative. 62 Contact Marks: This is what kills the grade on this coin. The reverse isn't too bad, and I'd probably give the reverse a 63+. The huge marks on the obverse all over her cheek and in the fields in front of her face really bring the grade down. These are large and numerous marks in prime focal areas on the obverse. The obverse gets a 61 for contact marks. So, to put all that together: The luster and quality of the reverse is going to help, but the eye appeal and beat up obverse is going to hurt. I'd probably put this overall at a 62, but there's a good chance its 61.
I'm at '63........Lovely 2nd set of photogs dear fellow. And the first set ain't too shabby either. I think my white balance was out of wack last nite.
