This is an older holder and NGC was rather forgiving of reverse field marks and the "+" grade did not exist yet. The obverse is very clean with just a hint of planchet roughness on the jawline. In addition, the luster looks fantastic which is not always the case for 1950-Ds. I am bullish on this coin and am going to say it is graded MS67. The steps are close but there is some weakness under the 3rd pillar and NGC is very stingy so NO 5FS for this one. I have to say, no matter what the assigned grade, I think this coin is better than most of the MS67 1950-D's I have owned in my lifetime, and that is a bunch.
MS65 nice coin as seen, but would not be a FS. Could just be photo south of column 3 but my photo does not show detail. 3 or 4 major nicks in steps also would require more detail in photo. Also slight Obverse Rim Dent @ 5:30
I don't care what the TPG said about this coin. Lehigh told us everything that we need to know and I would take his opinion on a Jefferson Nickel over that of the TPGs any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
The steps do have full flow. I am not experience enough to say about the detail. Under column 3 is very light though.
Welcome to the new Market Grading Standards. It has now been referenced as coinflation. I like to call it another way for TPG to make money.
