So, I thought this would be a fun one. @Lehigh96 if you are out there...you might appreciate this one. I picked this coin up several years back because I thought it was neat. In addition to it's unique appearance...I liked it because I was born in 1985. So, what's the grade? The coin is slabbed by NGC. In addition to that...what is wrong with it? I didn't manipulate the colors in any way and I feel like the photos accurately portray the coin. However, the two thing vertical lines running through Jefferson's head are scratches in the slab...they are not on the coin.
Thank you for doing that. Yes, I know I posted this coin nearly a decade ago...but I thought it would be fun for people who hadn't seen it. You ruined it...congrats.
One thing about this coin that I want to point out...since it has been revealed what it is...is the significant ding on the rim on the reverse at 9 o'clock. The coin has really clean fields otherwise and is a neat piece...but I think this hit knocked the grade down a lot. It doesn't look nearly as bad in hand, but it's there. Otherwise it's a great coin. That defect was not visible in the online photos when I originally bought the coin...but I still love it. Also, I don't think it quite made FS because the bottom step on the bottom is slightly blended with the step above it...mostly on the right side. But, otherwise the steps are nicely intact.
Yes and I'm one of those people, just knew what it was ( error ) and when I did some research, your old post came up, so I posted it . What's the issue here, knowledge ....
Richie, I think that the rim ding should either: No Grade the coin, or Details grade the coin. The fact that they downgraded it for damage shows how inconsistent the TPGs can be with coins. The detail is strong and no marks should get it over MS-66. I see about the steps, you're right about the blend on the bottom step. Just my 2¢,
Obviously he point if the thread was to see what others thought it was. Posting an old thread that reveals it sorta ruins the fun.
I tend to agree. When I first saw it I felt that it makes it not gradable. I think ngc basically net graded this one because he rest of the coin is really nice. I will admit the photo makes it look worse than it is...but it's there. I was slightly annoyed when it arrived in the mail because the photos the seller had conveniently hid the ding. But I really like the coin otherwise. So I kept it. It's fun...doesn't have to be perfect.
Also. I should have mentioned this. The rim ding is a dent but that area that appears to be "missing" isn't. There's actually a small piece of the white slab insert sticking out over the ding which makes it look like a "chunk" is missing. Having examined it in hand with a loupe a lot closer today I feel that the coin is gradable and that this defect has knocked it down a couple points.
Not the best photo...but it was hard. You can see the plastic sticking out which makes it look worse in the photo. I almost wonder if the rim ding has a slightly rough spot which nicked the white insert when the coin was put in the slab.
I was going to say MS 65 And I agree with you @CamaroDMD ...considering how grading standards change over time it is a cool idea to repost an old guess the grade and see if the consensus standards have changed or stayed similar. Nice coin either way!
I like it. I would have probably done and felt the same, but it's unquestionably a super cool coin. I have no intention of getting deep into errors because there are just too many out there and too many variations (which is what makes them cool, but also means you're never really "done" collecting them). Did it come slabbed or did you submit it?
I bought it slabbed. I'm not really an error guy either...just too much to it. But I liked this coin when I saw it and it was affordable. Being 1985 pushed it over the edge for me.
