Is there a reason you had it graded? Is there something special about it? Luster is dull, strike is weak, eye appeal is negative. There are several significant marks, including in focal areas. I'd top this one out at 64.
Meow thinks for a 83 the strike is pretty good. But Meow would agree with the grade. Too many contact marks, and a dull luster. MS64 is spot on grade Meow thinks.
I'm curious also as to why. I know luster is hard to capture sometimes but there is really no sharpness to most of the strike or detail in the hair/wings. Plus Pluribus is not in good shape. I will refrain from GTG but also hope you do not take affront as to what I said.
Well here is a circulated 83p Meow found CRH that has the worst strike Meow has ever found in a quarter. Compared to this, that one has a great strike.
I'm going to say a 64. I don't really like the neck marks, so I think that lowered it from what could have been a 65.
The pictures are that bad. I really need to look at these pics better before I post them. I apologize. I wanted to show the marks as well as I could but I’m so doing made it impossible to grade. I was not trying to be difficult, I swear. Try these pictures. The luster shows better.
I still am at a 64. Though the marks on the neck can be probably allowed for a 65, this is not a strong strike, and for a 65 it should I think have a stronger strike. I am presuming it is NGC that graded yours, and that's fine, but this is one of the things they have on their site for this coin: "Even in the Souvenir Sets, the quarters are not always in gem condition and are often weakly struck, late die state examples". I tend to see that yours is more what I would still say is weakly struck, though it may not be a late die state example. I do like the luster, as I think it probably is as lusterous as one would like for a 65 and above.
These pictures show a different view of the coin, for sure. But, they aren't really any better. They are extremely underlit, and very out of focus. I see a little more luster evident in these pictures which gives me more confidence in the 64 grade. Thing is, both sets of pictures show a coin with a lot of marks. They both show a weak strike. But, if you know how to interpret coin pictures, they both show essentially the same thing. They show a coin that should grade 64.
The services tend to be pretty forgiving of the chicken scratching. It's not my favorite look for a clad but I'd expect it to get a 64 and even a 65 on a lucky day. For the date it's pretty clean and isn't badly struck by fairly new dies. I'd tend to call it a 62 but I'm not very forgiving of the unstruck areas. This being said I still like the coin and would be proud to own it no matter what they pinned on it.
My initial guess would be 62 for any other clad quarter. Granted I am here to learn. I'm thinking 65 because of the die issues with this date.
My initial impression was MS63, but based on the new photos that show much better luster, I would say MS64. I don't see any way for this coin to get a gem grade.
I'll say 65. The 83 P is hard to find in high grades and with this kind of strike. I wouldnt be surprised to see it as 66 either.
First impression was MS 64, but I think it may have ended up in an MS 65 holder. If you're happy with the coin, then that is all that matters.
The first images had me thinking MS63 tops. The second set look more like MS65. It is the same coin, right?
