The grade on the slab - not that I agree with it. This is one of the extremely rare cases I bought a coin (well below what the grade would normally get) without seeing good pictures and solely off of the grade. If I had seen good pictures or seen the coin in hand I probably would not have bought it even for the money I paid.
The top lines left of crack is the weak spot on these bell lines. Are you saying they gave it FBL? I agree with MS63.
Unless they just technically graded it. Technically, it could be every bit an MS65. Marketwise, those spots hurt the eye.
Your 2 different sets of pictures are really good examples of illustrating how 1 pic can show you show something and another pic completely hide the same thing. In this case, not just the spots, but changes in toning, light scratches, and contact marks as well.
I completely agree. If you just look at the 1st picture, you would think it is a great representation of the coin (especially the toning.) I would be happy buying coins with a picture of that quality. Then you add a little more light and change the angle and the hidden marks pop out at you. For these guess the grade threads, it is helpful when the OP shows a couple different angles with slightly different lighting. It is a good reminder when making buying decisions that the photo may have been taken (intentionally or not) in a way that hides issues that affect the value of the coin.
An attempt to remove the spots (that will still leave damage from the deterioration of metal) probably isn't worth the cost of what can be gained in value with what's already invested. I'll chalk this one up to a lesson learned.
Just the harsh lighting that was intentional to show some of the marks. The luster under that toning is all there. I do not believe this has seen any circulation just toned poorly and banged around a bit in the bag it was originally transported in would be my guess.
