Please guess the assigned grade of this 1945-S Jefferson Nickel and vote in the attached poll. Thank you! As always, comments welcome!
Looks like a 67 to me. The marks on Jefferson's cheek and jaw appear to be pre-strike planchet marks rather that post strike hits. The luster looks pretty nice coupled with a nice patina to add to the eye appeal.
Without looking at the poll options and looking at the pics first, I was gonna say 64, but now I see that's not even an option and obviously I'm way too low. I'll be the first to admit that Jefferson nickel grading is not my forte. My lowball intuitive guess is not to suggest I find the coin unappealing, by any means- it's very attractive. I suppose I'll guess 66 (no FS).
If a guy with a Jefferson nickel avatar likes it as a 67, I'm not gonna disagree. I did vote 66 (no FS or +), however.
This one has considerably less marks than the other one yesterday that I though the TPG would have called 66. I'm still bothered by the high point marks, but I'd guess a TPG would call this 67. There is a bit of die polish on the obverse that may hinder the luster, however. As for FS, not a chance from what I see in the pictures.
Jefferson Nickels are not my forte either, I tend to grade them a little tough. But I like to think that I've been learning how the TPG's grade these. I guess we shall see, I may by high. My avatar is the reverse of the reverse of a proof Jefferson Nickel I found in a '54 Proof Set. I absolutely loved the color, that the only reason it's me avatar for now.
And just an aside.......glad as the devil to see Paul posting some 'guess the grades'. I thought he was lost , but yet he has been found. Don't be a stranger, old sod.......
I will admit that this one wasn't a fair fight. For whatever reason, this coin which has solid 5 steps under a 5X loupe refuses to display those steps in a photograph and they appear to be broken. This happens from time to time and all I can say is that is why you need to see the coin in hand. Coincidentally, I actually bought this coin in hand, at the Allentown/Bethlehem show last weekend. For those that said MS66, congrats on getting the numerical grade right. On a different note, not sure what you gotta do to get a star out of NGC, this coin is gorgeous.
