This guess the grade thread is going to be a little different than most that I offer because I only have 10 total slots for the answers to the poll. I want everyone to cast TWO VOTES in the attached poll. The first vote will be for the grade of the coin, please pick one of the first 7 options for the grade. The second vote will be for the steps of the coin. Please evaluate the steps and cast your opinion of the steps in one of the last 3 options in the poll, which are not full steps, 5FS, and 6FS.

Please make your grade and full step determination and cast your votes before scrolling down to read the responses to the thread.

    I went 65 6FS.

That nickel is hammered. I think it’s 6FS all day. The grade was tougher. Weird toning but no sign of cleaning and I don’t agree with environmental damage.

I am sure it has booming luster and deserves a gem grade so I went with that. Sometime these war nickels have strange toning and this is one.

This nickel is a huge conundrum to me. I really believe there is wear on the obverse in the hair so I'm going AU58 but going with 6FS. Yeah, call that a bit schizoid.

I went 66 and 5fs...I’m not sure if it’s me or the photo, but two of the steps appear to be blended together....the color is funky (it appears like something was spilled on the coin), but I believe it went through (although environmental damage would not surprise me)....overall, I don’t see anything that would knock it down below the 66 (the color would have me a bit worried)

65, 6FS. A few light ticks on the coat and on Monticello, good luster, but gets dinged for the funky toning in the eye appeal department.

The result of this guess the grade will blow your mind. I'm not doing the reveal until tomorrow because we have had hardly any replies on the thread so far and the poll responses look light as well.

It seems that everyone had reservations about the toning on the coin, but were reluctant to details grade the coin so they simply net graded instead. Most people thought the coin was premium gem or gem and only three people thought the coin had environmental damage: @ddoomm1, @DCR Jerry, @Patrick King.

Take a bow guys, because about 2 weeks after submission I received a message from NGC telling me that the coin had environmental damage but that they could conserve the coin at NCS for an additional $25. The original grading fee was $20 bringing my total cost to $45. A little back story on this coin, I purchased and expensive coin (over $1K) about a decade ago and the seller sent this raw little full step gem as a freebie. I thought the toning was extreme but loved the steps so I put it in my album collection where it stayed until last month. NGC gave my 24 hours to make the decision whether to have the coin conserved or not. Since I paid no money for the coin, and the run of the mill 1943-D MS66 6FS is about $50, I figured it would be better to break even on the coin rather than have spent $20 on a problem raw war nickel that would be very difficult to sell for that $20 price tag. I told NGC to proceed with the conservation and waited patiently for both the grade and change in appearance. Without further ado:

Don't ya just love a happy ending?

The only question I have now is, what should I do with it? Given the incredible story, I am very seriously considering adding this to my registry collection and replacing my MS67*5FS.

    MS-65 6FS. Butt-ugly toning/staining.

I like it better at a 66 now, but that was quite a conservation

Nice results in the conservation! I'd be more likely to say 66 than 67 now, but will defer to Jefferson specialists. As for whether to keep it or the other, I'd have to see both coins to choose. How close are the 5FS and 6FS in terms of strike? What is the star for? If the other 67 pops more than this one or has attractive color, I'd probably choose it.

I see a PCGS gasket in the "before" pictures. Did PCGS also call it ED?

Based on the marks on Monticello, the coin should be MS66 and that was the grade I was expecting. That said, I have no idea what they did to remove what the called “residue” but now that they have, the luster is phenomenal, near the best I’ve ever seen on a War Nickel. It seems obvious that they rewarded the luster and overall presence of the coin while overlooking the reverse marks that would normally relegate the coin to MS66 grade.

I’m having trouble locating decent photos of my current registry coin and might have to take new photos.

As for the gasket, I sometimes use gaskets from crackouts as temporary protective devices during my photography process. This coin was never graded by PCGS. I got it raw as a freebie, put it in an album for a decade, and submitted it to NGC last month.
