Really nice toning. Not as dramatic as the TrueView, but still quite attractive pastel toning. Very clean obverse. The obverse is a solid 67. The reverse has some chatter and contact marks on the reverse. Given that the date is usually weakly struck, I am wondering about die artifacts, as opposed to contact marks—looks like a combination of weak strike, and worn dies. So, the reverse gets a 66 from me. The coin should be 66+, but I am betting on a 65 grade, as I think they penalized it for the die state, and the weak strike, which would be wrong.
Fine looking specimen!! I'm always a little hesitant about the 'stubble' on the jaw, but many coins I see have some and grade well. For me, it's not a detractor but not sure how the graders feel about it. Enjoy that coin!
The "stubble" on the jaw tends to be known as planchet roughness and you are correct that many Jeffersons have it. I believe the graders allow it to a certain extent on higher grade coins. I also tend to be hesitant when seeing it, but have learned to (begrudgingly ) accept it. As long as the overall coin has good eye appeal, I can deal with it.
Thanks for that update. I've been wondering about that for a long while now. I had gotten to the point that if I couldn't assign it to the coining process or transit damage, it might indicate some early circulation wear (although I'd be looking for some confirmation in other high relief areas).
With the bag marks and hits, especially the one on his jaw bone below the ear, I'm not sure if it would reach 67, so I'd guess MS66. Just a guess on my part.
I wanted it to be more challenging. The Trueviews alone don't give the full picture, so that is why I included both photos.
There are too many marks on the coat collar and shoulder to get MS67. In fact, based on how tough both NGC and PCGS are on the 38-D, those marks should really drop the grade to MS65, but I am going to say that the color kept it at MS66.
