Backstory: "First time at a new coin shop" find. Not graded by a TPG, but it came in a plastic flip with a card that listed the grade, price and seal/address for Lee Numismatics Int'l. in Merrimack, NH. I googled it when I got home out of curiosity and saw this PCGS article showing that it was Ed Lee's outfit, who owned and later sold the "Eliasberg/Lee" 1913 PR66 Liberty Nickel for $4.15 million in 2005. I was happy with the coin already, but as far as random grades on flips go I'll take that one any day. Curious where you all are at on this one. Will reveal Sunday evening after some folks chime in.
I am at a 67. I cant quite tell on the MM. A clearer photo would help. Nice buy John. From the looks of it, I am leaning more towards a OMM
I'm thinking the same but I'll see if I can get a clearer shot of it to confirm. Didn't match any RPM's that I saw listed so probably just the light playing tricks on my brain.
I will guess that the flip said something like 65/65 (obverse and reverse graded separately) I agree with the others that this looks like a superb example, worthy of a 67 nowadays. Great find!
The 1938 D/D I have shows the original MM south and west of the repunched MM. I can't tell if you have an OMM or not.
Yeah, I don't think it's a D/D but figured I'd post as it looked a bit mushy and odd to me. Could easily be a regular ol' MM for all I know. Thought maybe @Paddy54 or someone might know from experience... The limited amount I have with that stuff is with Jeffs.
Gonna hop on the computer and post the grade shot here in a little bit if anyone else wants to venture a guess.
I'm at 66 of. This one if it went 67-68 I could believe it. Nice coin I will look at the mm later been at a coin show all day.
"Choice Br. Unc 65" The dealer started at the price on the flip- we ended up at $40 out the door. I paid slabbed money for it, but felt it was at least a lock at 66... it really stood out instantly among the other MS 38-D's there. Besides some very minor chatter, the only distracting thing I'm seeing is whatever that vertical line is right in the center of the buffalo. I don't know enough about how they grade these to say if that would keep it from a 67. Either way, I'm happy. Thanks to all for the positive comments on it and for confirming my suspicion that this was likely a coin graded some time ago. As a side note- is it common for "Br" to indicate brown/bronze in relation to color? Depending on the lighting, it can have some bronze hues like in these two below, but I don't recall seeing that in a grade before. Great, thanks! Hope it was a good one.
