Recently picked up from Heritage; photos are theirs. I feel the coin is actually quite overgraded by PCGS. I'm hoping once the coin arrives perhaps a good amount of the marks are on the holder versus the coin itself; however, it really seems to be dinged up quite a bit. I'd love to hear some guesses and rationales. If anybody is curious: the certification number is only 7 digits long signifying it's "older." Edit: I will admit - in this case, I purchased the label slightly more than the coin. The "value" of this coin is significantly higher than what I paid. Including buyer's premium, I paid $1 under greysheet.
MS65 Heritage photos are notorious for subduing luster and the coin will almost always be more lustrous in hand. The focal areas are very clean except the hit on the nose and you stated the coin was overgraded so I’m definitely erring on the high side. PS: The fact that the slab has the series and coin numbers on it dates it.
No we need to find a TPG who know how to grade! And will add this those 2 specimens were in my collection years before you were born....so no i dont need a better dealer.
I'm at AU-58. No luster and the hair is worn. To me it appears those small marks the W G in IN GOD WE are Damage. I can see metal on both sides of the area. You have a coin with an error label. There's no grade and part of the number is missing. Lol
So, I tend to agree with most of you folks - I'm thinking this coin is ~MS63 based on plethora of dings; however, PCGS gave it a much, much higher grade... I'm shocked it's graded so high. Can anybody explain why this coin could've possibly received such an inflated, high grade?
I must say here is the" queen mother" of why you buy the coin not the slab. And the poster child of how PCGS missed this by a country mile. And no way pay 66 money on a 60 +/- coin.
Frankly, my eye says Peace dollars are graded all over the place, often with a lack of anything resembling consistency. Your eyeball is your best friend with this series.
I'm curious to see what this coin looks like in-hand once it arrives. Not disappointed with the purchase - it bumps my 20th Century Type registry set up to rank 30
I already did. The coin has high MS64 or low end MS65 surfaces. If the luster is off the charts, which it very well could be, I can see the coin getting bumped to at least MS65 and possibly a low end MS66 like it is.
I did not get the chance, as I was late to the party. I would have said 65, as the surfaces are very clean, but the pictures do not show that much luster to get a 66 grade. I guess the luster is better than pictured.
Finally got this coin yesterday. In hand, it looks significantly better than the pictures. There are certainly dings - which the photos pointed out - but they're not nearly as prominent as the photos would suggest. The luster is crazy; perfect cartwheel on both obverse and reverse without any breaks. And the texture of the coin looks almost ...creamy? The patina on the fields looks "original," akin to a modern silver dollar commemorative.
I see a less than perfect planchet, with a good strike, that has a couple of displeasing dings. For me, it would be a low MS.
