I'm really bad at detecting altered surfaces on gold coins. I'm being proactive. If the surfaces are original, then I would say AU55. If that's a stain (vs. wear) on the headdress, then it may grade higher. I had a similar 1914S I sent to NGC and it came back "AU Details". A lotta coins on eBay are problem coin crackouts.
I think it's AU-Details and not from any scratches or cleaning. I think I see around the edge on both obverse and reverse the marks from a jewelry bezel. As always, happy to be wrong as well as right so long as I learn something. 17 hours to Summer FUN! I'm looking for a Classic Head, No Motto half eagle, among other things.
The 1925D has a buckled die and always has that effect around the rims. Im not seeing enough damage around the rims to warrant a bezel. These are usually struck this way. Im not seeing much wear so thats why I have my grade as is. There is weakness in many of the lower feathers in the headress. Also some scratches keeping it low MS, in my non professional opinion. Im probably way off. Also the cloudiness on the obverse looks like its the plastic so my view is based on that.
