I bought this one because I liked the patina, and it seemed like a nice example. What do you think is the assigned grade?
My personal MS-63 (I'm conservative) but I'll say TPGS MS-64. Here is the problem w/GTG photos. Coins usually look 100% different as you tip and rotate them in the light. So that's why IMO this coin could be either grade. Take a look at the photos I'm posting of a Proof Jefferson nickel's head at 15X. Note that even at 15X, you cannot see the scrapes until the coin is held "just so. "
Absolutely right. static photos can only reveal so much, and Peace Dollars are especially hard to grade from photos. Keep the guesses coming, I'll post the grade Saturday.
From those pics, I'd bid 55. It appears attractive, but the lack of luster in the fields is making me lean towards a brush of wear. The high points on these are never fully struck, so it is impossible to accurately judge AU vs UNC from a picture. But, that's what I'm going with.
AU 58... im with physics, I had a raw '21 peace similiar to this one and there was no way I could call it UNC
Come on guys...These days an Au-55 to 58 coin can still be an MS-62. This coin IMO (using the photo) has virtually all of its luster. I hate coins with any rub/loss of luster so I'm usually the only AU guy in a grading class See if I can convince you it is unc. Otherwise, one turn in the light and all the high spots may go dull = AU and I'll eat crow.
I like the coin, I'd call the strike a bit above average, but I can't convince myself it's uncirculated. AU-58. I guess I can't call grading peace dollars my strong point, I have a 1921 that I've tried at both ANACS and NGC, got an MS61 at both services, I think it's better.
My thoughts on this range from AU58-MS64. The Obverse has excellent details for a 21 Peace. I see what could be slight scratches @ 9-10 but those could be in the plastic.. just not sure would have to see this one to be sure. Luster on reverse appears to be without visible wear. Obverse has two small gouges in front of Liberty .. Just a wild guess the scratches are in the plastic so MS-64.
I'm not 100% convinced after one set of images BUT for the sake of argument - if the assigned grade is MS, I'll eat crow... I see wear along the eagles right side.... So I'll stick to my original guess of 58.... We shall see who is right and who is wrong!! PS: This would be a really neat coin to try that piece of white paper/reflection trick Messy desk mentioned the other day!!!
Strike and Wear -- Woo is me Peace's are tough and do not age like the Morgans. I will hazard a guess at 65
IMO, the paper trick would show gray areas on many places. For instance that slightly discolored patch near the top of the wing, and behind the eagle's mouth. Nevertheless, virtually all the mint luster is there in the photo. Now, when I stick my face next to the screen the reverse is till 64 BUT the most important side: Obverse is covered with quite a few marks. I call for a redo: This coin is only graded MS-63. That's what's good/bad about grading. It is subjective. There is no right or wrong (as long as you are within a point either way). I know, I know, that can mean $$$$$$$$$$$$ but leave the money out for now. As a teaching exercise, consider a perfect coin with a small amount of luster loss from cabinet friction... If you see the friction the coin is AU-58. If you don't see it or ignore it , the coin is MS-65. I read that this actually happened when a $20 Saint was graded by several expert witnesses in Federal Court. If I owned the OP coin I should price it as a 64 and buy it as a 62 or 63. Who? me?
If this coin IS in fact graded AU, would you buy it from the OP for 62/63 money $$ ???? That IMO would be the ultimate serving of crow
The reverse of the coin is top notch eye appeal imo. Strike is above average for a 21 for sure. Too much chatter on the obverse I'd say 62 but could see a bump to 63.
Absolutely not. Too low eye appeal for me. I once owned a BLAST WHITE 100% original 21 with just a little better that the typical strike. Full luster, no hairlines and "mossy flat strike luster" on the weak areas. I had the coin for less than a month when a kid smarter than I pried it away for "stupid" money. LOL...I was just thinking...some here are probably thinking the is a "Big Fish" story On second thought yes. I would crack it out and sell it raw. ANYWAY, it is hard to tel what the TPGS do sometimes. I'm saying MS-63 and you are AU-something. I'll bet we are both wrong in the end
