Hard to tell for sure but I think I see wear above the ear and on the eagle's breast feathers. Beautiful toning, though. Nice mix of colors and it looks to me like Liberty is crying.
Liberty crying reflects a sad state of affairs this Country is in. Just my opinion though, and a great observation you made.
Reminds me of a Roosie I used to have with some gunk coming out of its mouth. As a kid I used to call it "barfbag roosevelt". It's gone in some Loomis roll by now
All I can do is be the guy people whisper about in corners "damn, that's the dude who aced the AFOQT but couldn't be a pilot because his eyes suck"
I'd think it was a 64 or even 65 since I don't see any bag marks in critical areas. That vertical line of dark toning below the eye kinda sticks out in a negative way but I wouldn't think negative or ugly toning like that detracts much from the grade of a coin, at least for a 65 and below.
I think that coin should have been a 64. The thing that cost it the higher grade was the weak strike for the date. The breast on the eagle is pretty bare--NOT WEAR, but a strike issue. Love the toning.
Wow.. I was deceived by those photos. I would have sworn up and down the the highlighted spots below were rub marks. The discoloration looked like breaks in luster to me. I know I wasn't the only one. This is one coin I would love to see in hand.
I'm late to the party, but I was trying to decide if it was AU-58 or MS-63. I eventually decided I was on the side of 63, but the photos are not showing it well. The breaks in the toning that you see are due to the way it was stored. I would guess that this coin was stored in an envelope or folder, where the high points were in contact with the paper. These didn't tone, but the rest of the coin did. I see this fairly often, and it is very difficult to determine MS/AU from pictures with this type of toning.
