The obverse is tough to read cause of that "crackled???" toning. Very neat looking. Hair above the ear looks flat. Slider maybe? My first thought was MS-63 so that's what I will go with
I don't even want to take a guess. Sorry, not my taste. My first impression was . Sorry, don't take it personal! It just looks like a problem coin to me. I'm not an expect though. Is that natural toning? It looks like it's been sitting between something for years. Something with a pattern, a cushion? Plastic? Material? An old coat pocket? Styrofoam?
I don't think it's AT or else it would have been graded authentic but artificial toning. It's hard to tell what created the pattern. Styrofoam is a good guess. Maybe a bag of some type too?
1896 is a common enough date that you don't need to take on a possible problem coin if you don't already own it.
The pattern looks almost like a honeycomb of sorts but the compartments are round rather than hexagonal. Chris
This one is super tough to read. But it looks fairly clean, I'm at a 64 on it for weak strike and enough rash in the fields and the few hits on the cheek.
Dipping is too dangerous for this coin DAMN. That would be cool if it was an 87p vam 12 (vammers will get the joke) As for grade, might have pulled a 64
I'm going with 64. I suspect the surfaces are worthy of a 65, but the unique toning (which I kind of like, but definitely doesn't add to the grade) might have knocked it down a notch.
