Hello all Buoys and Gulls (Maine thing, LOL)!! FUN Time!!!
I have this 1883 Liberty Nickel (aka V-Nickel).
You all know the game. I keep it going for a couple of days. spongebobdance.gif
Have fun!! The area at about K10 is either just a stain or combination stain/Lamination error. Thanks for guessing!!

I'm very bad at guessing grades. That is a very nice coin. It is close in grade to the one I got in 1948 that started me on collecting.

    AU 50. Somewhat wild guess.

Look around the stain, could be natural toning. Nice coin, I'll stick my neck out and say MS-60.

Area of concern, at least as far as the photos show:

It could be a slab issue.

Though a basement slab grade of MS63 wouldn't surprise me.

If it were MS it would go much higher than that.

Okay then, MS-64. I agree it could be higher, but the cleaning might hinder a higher scale score.

I think it's plausible it gets sacked for that. Shame, though, if it did. Technically, a very strong coin.

Wild guess says that it was gold plated and subsequently cleaned. Not unheard of for 1883 W/O Cents.

It’s got a rub in the center of the obverse with hairlines going in the same direction. Not a good sign. This date and variety is super common in AU. Many were saved.

Here is the one my aunt gave me from her jewelry box back in 1948.

I've got one that was gold plated, not very well, I might add. All that's left is a yellowish tint. I know, no picture, it didn't happen, but I'm not where the coin is, so I was fibbing, it didn't happen, lol. But, inspector43, you could very well be correct. That tint on the coin could be where it was plated?

I don't know if this helps but I'll give you all 2 facts:
One: Possible slab scuffs. I'll check it out.
Two: Not graded as a problem coin. No Damage noted. That's why I say stain/ possible lamination error as stated by Fred Weinberg in another post.

Yes, after I looked back at your photo, I don't think it would be from plating. I wasn't looking at the photo when I was typing, trying to go by memory (not a good idea). I can't say what it is, but I think it's something beside previously being gold plated.

Okay. I checked out the coin/slab again and came to this conclusion:
*** The marks are on the slab definitely. The lines coming down from the ear as well as the scuff areas on Face/ Neck area.
