I’ve been in to coins for going on 40 years and I almost can’t believe this is my first “CC” coin. Only my second twenty cent piece, too. I had an “S” of the same year that I sold years ago. Wanting to fill the hole in my type set, and this one “speaking to me”, I pulled the trigger. Have a stab at the PCGS grade if you wish. Any and all comments welcome, and share your twenty centers if you have them!
Very nice CC. When I was very young, probably in the early 1950's, there was an old man who pushed a vegetable cart down the alley's in our neighborhood. My mother sent me out to get something from him. She gave me a 50 cent piece and expected me to bring back 25 cents. I gave the man the 50 cents and he gave me back a 20 cent piece. I quickly analyzed the situation. Should I take a chance that mom won't get mad? When I came in the house and showed her the 1875-S Twenty Cent piece she said "you had better put that in your coin collection". I recently gave it to my youngest son who was born in 1975.
Nice coin! These are getting harder to find with an original mintage of 133,290, no telling how many were melted over the years. Anything Carson City is in demand. I actually got stung buying this coin in XF/AU condition from a very reputable dealer in the early 80's and did not find out about it until 30 years later when I finally submitted it to PCGS! By that time the dealer had just passed away! Expensive Lesson learned even if it was 30 years later...
Ooh! Congrats! Nice original looking piece, too. For those saying "VG", I reckon y'all are going by the lack of any LIBERTY on the shield. Sure, that's the thing with regular Seated coins, but it doesn't apply to 20-cent pieces, since the letters in LIBERTY were raised on those, rather than incuse. I was originally going to guess VF25 on the coin in the OP, but upon reconsideration, I think that might have been a bit too high. I'll revise my guess to Fine-something. I'll say F15, though its details look very similar to the F12 I used to own.
@Mr. Numismatist @lordmarcovan , spot on! Rob, thanks for the callout on the design wear details. This coin is currently my "nightstand" piece.
