IMHO, these coins are SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO overgraded it is virtually impossible to instruct anyone on how to do it! Back in the 1970's this would go into the files as an XF-45. Today, with strict grading it would be an AU-50. If the obverse had as little friction as the reverse it would have a chance of sliding into the Commercial MS-61 grade. The hairlines hurt the coin more than the wear. So without the hairlines an NGC AU-58. I'm going to guess with the amount of friction and hairlines it is over graded as an NGC AU-55. AU-53 would be an excellent grade and the MAXIMUM I would give it.
It’s not just the obv hairlines which bother me, there’s also à scratch in the field next to Liberty’s hair and a quite distracting hit at the lower curls. I’d say AU-50 or AU details, depending on how bad mentioned issues look in hand.
Wow, AU-58?? Talk about grade inflation. Even though it's after the fact, I wanted to say AU-50 cleaned. "Buy the coin, not the slab!!!" Ain't that the truth!
I would expect fewer marks for a 58, but the grader probably gave it more points for luster and vintage.
