AU55, reverse clashed with flying eagle cent. Aaaaaaand, boom goes the dynamite. That's a $3500 coin.
I wish I could have cherrypicked it. I looked at every 1857 on Ebay for years and years. I finally gave up and just bought one. I'll post the grade tonight.
Wrong direction eddie. Hint. Think of how the grading services treat a woody. I'm not calling this a woody, it's not. Just funky toning caused by ?.
You weren't the only one. It's still one of my saved searches, but I never found one. Bought a couple that I thought may have been, but, no dice.
That's funny. I bought 6 or 8 thinking I saw something in the image. I was wrong every time. I have seen 2 or 3 over the years but they had problems and folks knew what they were. Fun stuff.
Not again! Lol. I know on the whole they don't give woodies fair grades. If they graded your coin down for the color, I hope they're not driving, because I think they're intoxicated.
I will say this... nearly ALL 1857's had areas that were weakly struck, no matter what die pairing. Flat stars, flat eagle feathers, shallow letters, etc. And even though strike is a part of grading, 1857's with awesome luster can still be graded quite high.
I'd call it a 53, with a shot at 55 if the luster is strong in hand. And how in the hell does a quarter clash with a cent? That sounds like mint shenanigans to me! I'm not a fan of these "manufactured" oddities, even if that is an attractive coin.
There are a slew of 1857's that clashed. Many denominations. Everyone's best guess is that someone was screwing off at the Mint after hours.
