I love this design, had my eye out for one with this look for a long time and found it raw... TrueViews just posted.

    Nice coin.
But don't try to get it slabbed.
I had an 1894 Morgan with dark toning like your coin.
PCGS wouldn't slab it because they said the toning could be hiding a problem.

35 or 40, kind of on the cusp IMO. I bet they called it 40, the circam contrast really makes the design elements stand out.

Surfaces are choice and original with some luster remaining, luckily just dark in color.

I actually bought from bad pictures and had no idea what to expect from the surfaces but was very pleasantly surprised when I got it in hand under a loupe.

Nice original VF30/35. I see no reason why it wouldn’t grade. They shouldn’t have removed the rays, IMO the design is one of the best of all classic US series.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

    Wow, that is *dark*

Too much wear for a 30, not enough wear for a 20.

I'm going to go with the unusual grade of 25.

I'm with the crowd, love the arrows & rays!

    Why not EF??

Simply because there’s too much wear, it’s too dark and there’s not enough remaining luster.

Okay, that works for me. I was looking at the Redbook definition for EF. It seemed like it matched. Thanks!

    I'll say VF35.

Quite nice. I'd say VF-35. Yes, it's a little dark but I think that just sets off the devices nicely. I've seen many lighter coins in the same grade that were far less attractive. Great eye!

XF40. Lots of details v- especially feathers on the eagle, but no luster.

I’ve just looked at a couple of NGC/PCGS graded XF40’s and they have about as much wear as this coin. It seems they’re lenient with this type, maybe because it’s a single year issue. I am quite confident this coin would grade high VF with today’s standards.
