Round eighteen. PCGS. This may be the last one for a while. I think I wore everyone out. These are tough to grade. Almost like trying to grade proofs from images.
Some initial thoughts: Interesting doubling or other happenings at UNITED. Have not checked Overton Number. Late Die State—lots of metal flow causing wear ‘lines’ on the die, which were transferred to the coin. Also some flat details resulting from worn dies at stars, talons, etc. Very nice toning. Guessing AU 50 to 53.
I would grade it XF45, but no one pays me for my opinions (they have better sense). TPG’s, however, would probably see it as AU, maybe 53, because it’s so nice. Another winner!
50 1831's are tough. The obverses were almost always hammered, but the reverses were not. You see a lot that look AU58 on the obverse and XF45 on the reverse. Thus, my guess.
First impression was 53 and that was without licking the drool onto my thumb... Great run of Bust Halves!
