Let's see how close you all get to what NGC says. Should be fairly straightforward. Also, what would you pay for it?
VF25. Normally I like rim toning like that especially blue but not a big fan of it on a circulated coin like this. It probably went for a premium that I personally would not be a player on
I would snap that up if it was cheap. Admittedly, i have no idea what this date books fir. Ill go F+ I wouldnt pay a premium
I already have seen its grade, so I won't guess, but I think it's very nice looking, despite the fact that it's been cleaned or dipped previously. That said, I'd be in the $300 neighborhood if I was in the market for an 1808 half dollar.
Based on my system This coin is a high VF20 and could be a easy CAC coin. And it is not a details coin like other are saying, (@BooksB4Coins and @IBetASilverDollar, so far I am the only one on this thread that has said this is defiantly a 20 and is not a details coin so you cant say I said so after he shows the grade) I know that I am right here and this proves my grading ability
But this coin has undeniably been cleaned. If you deny that fact, then your grading abilities are not as good as you thought.
You're going to look back at this time in your life with great embarrassment when you grow up. The fact that these are known with weak strikes should not be construed as reason to grade them all as if they'd been weakly struck. Especially knowing weak strikes exist, the first step to evaluating the coin is evaluating the strike. I'm seeing Fine-level details in some places, and a near-untouched shield (which does_not strike weakly), and concluding this one is a weaker strike. The disparity in detail between left and right stars helps reinforce the impression that the Mint could have set this one up better. Mind, though, that a planchet thickness irregularity could be the culprit.... Surfaces are too bright to be original. The toning is lovely, "natural" after the stripping, and I don't think I'd turn it down at the right price (under $150, preferably $25 under $150). VF details, my numeric grade 30.
And even looking it up Ed missed on the biggest aspect of the grade, that little star inflates coin prices beyond belief (although to be fair to the star premium in my experience my NGC star coins have been worth every penny of premium). Come on get it together Ed
