    Hey cointalk,
I simply hate Littleton for doing these things to me!!

    1) When my parents got me some npq's for Christmas by answering to a Littleton ad ( when I was an clear Newbie)
, they freaked out when 3 months later a letter came from Littleton that they hadn't payed for the Coins on Approval coins!! My parents had to pay double for them and it made them HATE numismatics! They hated my hobby:(

    2) Their coins are too expensive !! When i was younger, without knowledge, I spent my whole birthday money on Littleton coins when I could have bought 3'times more coins elsewhere with the same money!

    3) when they sent me a letter saying to join a Lincoln cent collectors club (3 months ago, i did not join the club), they sent me a free ( not on- approval) 2009 lincoln cent with the letter. The problem is, they put the cent on a tape- thing which when I took the coin off made a tape residue on it! Well, as a leader in the coin collecting community, shouldn't they be rather ADVOCATING the use of a proper coin storing method by not taping the coin on the envelope??

Just remember...don't buy from Littleton Coin Co.!!

Littleton is NOT a leader in Numismatics they are a leader in scamming unknowing beginning collectors (and the loved ones thereof) They sell cleaned coins, plated coins and outright culls with grades that don't come even close to reality!

001.JPG 002.JPG 003.JPG I wonder what the Littleton customer paid for this, before I got it for around $4 as part of a group of 23 at a consignment auction? (Too bad about the scratch in the field under Liberty's nose :( )

Littleton did NOTHING to you, young sir, and you would be wise to realize this. Let's examine and be honest about your "done me wrong" list...

    1) If your parents agreed to the "on approval" service, received the coins sent them, and simply did not pay or RETURN, who is really at fault here?

    2) You, for whatever reason, made the CHOICE to spend your money with them. I can only assume that a Littleton executive did not come to your home and put a gun to your head, so why blame them for a decision you made?

    3) Basically they sent you a FREE GIFT and you are complaining about it. Not only was the cost of sending this gift certainly more than it's worth, but how many were sent to people who did no future business with the company; think of costs vs. return. Would you be happy and still buying from them if they had placed each coin in an air-tite? I highly doubt it so you have no right or reason to complain.

Please understand that I write this not being a great fan of Littleton. Yes, their prices are high, but consider their market and means of doing business; all that overhead must be covered somehow. You also might want to consider the fact that there are people out there who know full well that they pay more than they would elsewhere, but enjoy the Littleton way of collecting, so who are you (or anyone else) to tell them how to enjoy their hobby?

Generally speaking, a collector who buys from Littleton can at least rest easy knowing that they will get what they were promised... even if priced high, their offerings are almost always as advertised. Stick around for a while and you will undoubtedly see people here who buy coins off ebay (or other venues) thinking that they got some great deal when in reality, they too overpaid, but instead of getting something expensive-yet-decent, they end up with complete dreck. Ask yourself which is worse.

    I agree with everything except
I started out as a Littleton customer and many of the approval items I received were overgraded. ALL of the US material was overgraded and/or cleaned. Littleton has a reputation for being paying high prices when they buy, but they insist that the coins be solid for the grade and no problem. But when they sell those solid no problem Fines and VF's on approval they are sold as VF's and XF's.

Thank you. I fully admit that I've never been nor had a reason to have personally used them, so I can only speak from what I've seen and this has generally been acceptable, especially when compared to what most of the local B&Ms try to pass off; essentially a "worse of two evils" type situation. The biggest Littleton-issue I've had to deal with is those who either do not realize, or are unwilling to accept that they've overpaid and are not going to recoup anything near the price they originally paid.

Thanks I missed that part. They sell the F's and VF's as VF's and XF's and charge XF and AU money.

Just got in out of the sun--and sun burt--using my freedom of speech rights, Littleton is out to make money-mass mailings, mass ad postings in coin world, what a two page ad every week--but we all know-as with many companies out there, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing or mailing--yeah I like to scan their ads, but will not purchase from them--

Never, ever liked the "on approval" gimmick. As a marketing ploy, it excels... in reality, it's tough on collectors and unsuspecting buyers of their "coins". It appears that with a payroll required for 350+ employees, profits have to be maximized somehow.
