I am writing to question about the price discrepancies between the regular grey sheet prices and grey sheet Certified Prices. Why is there sometimes a big price discrepancy between the two in the same grade? And usually the certified price is cheaper. Thanks in advance. And if buying graded coins, which should I be paying more attention to or using and combining both prices?
The Greysheet is specifically printed for any coin, certified or raw, that is accurately graded. Conversely, the Bluesheet is for certified coins in specific grade holders and can be thought of as representing the absolute worst coin that might slip into a holder at a given grade by a given company. In other words, the Greysheet is for typical coins and the [/I]Bluesheet [/I] is for overgraded dogs. However, if you are writing about the little box within the cover of the weekly Greysheet then that is a useless bit of data held over from previous generations that has no real bearing on the hobby.
Thanks Tom that answers my question. My thinking if the grey sheet is for all coins certified or raw and it depends upon grade, then why bother with the blue sheet. If I look at a coin and feel it's over graded then I won't buy th coin. Is that more for slab buyers? Also not sure what little box you mean.
The one thing that Tom didn't mention ( he kinda did in a way) is that the Grey Sheet list prices for sight seen coins; and the Blue Sheet list prices for sight unseen coins. In other words, the CDN is acknowledging what all people who know coins already know, that not all grades are equal and that the TPGs screw up often enough that it matters. (That's what Tom was saying.) And when you get to see see a coin in your hand (sight seen) you can judge if that coin has been graded accurately or not. But when you don't get to see a coin and all you have to go by is the assigned grade on the slab (sight unseen), you cannot judge if the coin has been graded accurately or not. That creates a lot more risk for you as the buyer. And more risk equates to a cheaper price. This is the little box - - it is absolutely worthless.
