I have found several coins with bright green mold. I haven't tried to clean them, just separated them from the rest. I've seen posts saying to use olive oil to soak coins is this what I should do? Also does anyone know of computer software to inventory and catalog coins? Thanks
So is this on ancient coins? If the green is bright green and flaky looking its bronze disease most likely. Contact @BadThad here and get a bottle of verdicare to treat it. Its the only commonly sold product that will remove it permanently. Do not soak in olive oil as this will do nothing but darken the coin and possibly spread it. As for computer software, most I know of just use an Excel spreadsheet. I don't, since I do that for a living so it would be a busman's holiday for me to put them in, plus I am a hoarder so I simply do not have time to put in tens of thousands of coins.
The 'green ' part is part of both and are the various copper compounds formed by corrosion. If it is shiny and sticky appearing , the copper compounds are part of the plasticizers used in flexible PVC holders. If the compounds are dry and flaky they are just copper compounds "in situ", attached to the metal, called various names, corrosion, verdigris, 'bronze disease', etc. Acetone works against the PVC plasticizers problem, and I also agree about Badthad's , having used with excellent effects over the years. Since we never know what appearance the metal has under the green, such as pitting or scratches, one should consider which is the worse of the evils
Numismatics is a hobby, and I like good surprises. If I had an inventory, it would only give me bad surprises, such as 'you have this coin, just can't find it...", whereas if I don't list it , " Wow, just found this stash of buffs I forgot about! "
Lol, I agree. I LOVE finding stuff I forgot I had. I always wanted a large silver Iranian coin, and would look on Ebay occasionally. Just a few months ago I was going through a large lot I bought about 5 years ago, and found there were two of these in there! Sweet!
the coins are all loose in a box. modern coins, dimes, quarters and a Susan B. good to know about the olive oil. I will try to make it to my down town coin shop. Maybe they will have treatment. Thanks every one!
