So, last week I made a poll asking you to vote for your favorite cent design. The premise was, the US government had decided to change the cent to a "historical" design based on a popular vote. So, now that poll has closed...it's time to do it for the 5 cent piece. I think I'll do a weekly poll of this fashion just for fun. OK, so this week is the 5 cent piece. Now, I call it a five cent piece rather than a "nickel" because the US has used two separate kinds of 5 cent pieces...as we all know those are the half dime and the nickel. Again, here are the "rules and circumstances" behind the poll. The US government has decided to change the design on the nickel. They don't want to use a new design, rather bring back an the most popular design in US history. They want to change the design on all denominations of our change to reflect the best America has ever used. However, there are some limits. Most notably, the planchet the coin is being struck on. Regardless of the winning design, the coin will be struck on the 5g nickel smooth rimmed planchet that is currently used. So, you may want to factor that into the decision you make. I tried to include all major designs of the half dime and nickels into the poll. I know the design from the 2005 nickel isn't listed, but because it was a one year only issue with multiple reverses...it was hard to add to the poll. So, I did the best I could to be as comprehensive as possible. The poll will run for 7 days and you will only be allowed to vote for one design. By the way, my favorite design is the Buffalo Nickel. So, I voted for that. I think it posted the thread while I was still making the poll. For some reason, this forum does that. :rolling:
Shield with Rays. I think that the reverse with Rays is a really unique and very spectacular look. I know they had problems with the strike on this coin -- there is so much going on, but it just makes the rays seem even more special. :smile When I hold a nice example in my hand I always think this is an extraordinary coin. I really like Shield Nickels but I think the Buffalo Nickel is the most attractive 5 Cent piece. So I voted for Buffalo Nickel.
I think, as well, a lot of people will be voting for the buffalo, and while nice I still think the Liberty nickel wins hands down. It is just a fabulous design all around.
None of the designs strike me as pretty, so I have to go with emblematic and symbolic and go Buffalo nickel.
I'd say the buffalo nickel is the most artistically beautiful coin, but I also really enjoy capped bust half dimes.
I was kind of thinking the same thing...but what I expected didn't happen with the cent poll, so you never know.
