So, over the last several months I have conducted a series of polls to determine which historical design the member s of Coin Talk would like to see return to our coins. We have gotten through the half dollar so far and now will begin the final poll for circulation coins. We may do bullion designs as well…you never know. ;)

So, here are the "rules" of my little scenario. The premise is, the US government has decided to change the design on all coins to a "historical" design based on a popular vote. The idea is that the coins will reflect the best America has ever used. However, they are using the current planchet still. This week's poll is the Dollar...but no matter what the winning design is, it would be made on a 26.5mm diameter smooth edge “golden” planchet. The rim of the coin would either be completely smooth or having writing on it depending on the original design’s specifications.

The poll will run for 7 days and you may only vote for one choice.

*I know that there were 2 major reverse designs for the Draped Bust Dollar but due to the limited number of poll spaces I had to combine the coin into one design. The same is true for the Sacajawea Dollar. If either coin wins I might run a tie-breaker poll.

    Previous Winning Designs
Cent: Flying Eagle Cent 34.15% of vote
Nickel: Buffalo Nickel 39.13% of vote
Dime: Mercury Dime 74.00% of vote
Quarter Dollar: Standing Liberty Quarter 79.31% of vote
Half Dollar: Walking Liberty Half Dollar 68.00% of vote

I voted for the morgan because that's my favorite design. I don't know how it would end up looking on the golden smooth edge planchlet though.

This one should be interesting, great thread Camaro :thumb:.

I did the same thing, but I agree...I don't know how it would look. But, I think it would be an improvement over the Presidents. ;)

This is a hard one. I have to go with the morgan dollar, it's just a classic american coin. But the peace comes in a very close second.

I would have to say the Morgan dollar would be the better choice. But, for a historical perspective, why not replicate the obverse of ALL the large dollars, from the Flowing Hair, through the Eisenhower, one after the other? Since they would not be exact replicas, it shouldn't violate any laws requiring that the Mint not "restrike" coins.

I chose the Peace $ because I believe that the weakness in the strike of the originals would not be there with the reduction of the size of the coin. The Morgan $ is too intricate for the smaller size and the Peace $ would excel in a golden dollar format.

I'd love to see a Seated Liberty type dollar in the tradition of the Gobrecht original design of 1836-1839. I think this would lend itself very well to a 26.5 mm planchet.

In a sense, that design was returned to our coinage - the Draped Bust Jefferson $5 a few years back.

Sure, it was just the obverse, and the bust was from the half cent... but ya gotta start somewhere.

Never really cared for the Morgan much, except for the reverse. The Peace is my favorite obverse, but would go for the Morgan on the reverse. Too bad we couldn't have split the vote.

How about a favorite Obverse and favorite Reverse of all coins poll? I think the WLH would take the Obverse, but would be a hard decision to make....too many favorites.
