Any one ever deal with them? thinking of buying from them. Seems they have a lot of high grade coin, ungraded. Any info good or bad. Would be nice. Thanks
Please read this thread. My comments about the seller are included within. http://www.cointalk.com/t61177/
i wouldn't buy from them, havent' looked at all of their auctions obviously, but in every one I've seen the coin's grade is either overstated or the coin is an ungradeable problem coin w/o the problems being disclosed. trust your gut, if a major dealer is selling high dollar stuff that you think should be in a slab, there's likely a reason it's not in a slab. even if you think you're getting a great deal, if it's too good to be true it probably is.
I purchased from them once. Never purchased from them again, and never will. When I see their listings on ebay, I wince. There's an old saying... if it looks to good to be true, than it probably is. That's all I have to say.
Most CT folks I've heard from don't like GSC. Among other things, they say GSC "juices" their photos. I've bought some really nice coins from them a few years ago. For instance, I bought a raw 1860 "Pointed Bust" IHP from them for less than $500 and it graded PCGS MS64BN. Perhaps I just look past the coins I don't like...the ones I've bought have been exactly as expected. I buy from GSC very rarely now...a lotta people track their auctions and it's tough to snag a deal. My last purchase was a 1909 Liberty nickel. I was hoping it would grade MS64 and it came back MS63...that's my only "bad" experience if you want to call it that. Lately, the grades they claim seem about one (1) grade too high (imo). If they say "Gem", it's likely MS64 If they say "Near Gem: it's likely MS63...and so forth. You just need to get used to that and bid accordingly.
Cha-CHING!! Here's an example of a GSC coin that has beautiful toning, but doesn't come up to the stated grade (imo). There's too many "rubs" to warrant "SOLID GEM PF+++". I don't get upset with GSC...I just look for something better. Here's an example of a GSC coin that should grade at least MS64FBL (imo). This is a $70 coin in MS64FBL and is selling for $36. I would be tempted to bid on this if I didn't have a bunch of them already. Here's an example of a GSC coin that looks spectacular, but the photo is overexposed; potentially hiding some defects. If it is as good as it looks, $500 would be a steal. I wouldn't bid unless GSC sent me some different pics. I've asked (and received) them in the past.

This thread is more than 3 years old, but I suggest you read the entire thread, including Paul's link in the 2nd post. Chris
I had a good experience with GSC. I bought this coin raw for $90-something. PCGS graded it MS65BN, with a guide value closer to $200
Yeah, WL's '17 that he bought awhile go from GSC came to my mind as a counterexample. I would stay away from their proofs (they can hide a lot of hairlines in the mirrors) and their bright white coins (for the same reason), but I would consider toners, such as WL's, since it's harder to hide scratches in darker toned coins...though, then again it's hard to see anything when the picture is about 3x3 inches and non-zoomable lol.
I bought an MS-64 Morgan from them once. When it arrived, there was heavy cheek rub (looked thumbed), so I returned it. They wrote me a nasty message about not bidding on things if I didn't want them, but I got my refund.
I've had one purchase from them. It was an 1827/6 CBH (unidentified - they had it listed as a plain 1827). Got it for $155 and PCGS graded it XF45. I sold it and doubled my money.
Since my earlier posts, I've received some coins from GSC with defects not apparent or specified in the auction. However, they've always honored returns without argument.
I was looking to start collecting capped bust halves. I'm a newbie, but when I saw GSC's collection of 1820's CBH's I got suspicious. They have a dozen or so, "Au+++" , all with a similar lovely (exaggerated-looking) patina. I immediately wondered how they could have so many with the same toning. Could these be questionable toning? Here's one example from today's page. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1827-Capped...93?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item51bba0ba95 Nevertheless, I'm tempted to buy something. I'm not planning on slabbing the coin, but I guess I shouldn't pay too much for it.
I participate on 3 coins message boards: This one, NGC and PCGS. I have never read a thread about Great Southern Coins that was not negative. There may be some who've had good experiences, but the majority of the people reported bad experiences. I would just stay away from them if I were you.
