After hearing so much about the Graysheet in various forums, I went to the company's site and downloaded the latest edition in PDF format. The latest issue is only 8 pages long and only covers commemeratives, proof sets, Morgan dollars, merc dimes, and walkers. Is this normal, or did I get a truncated copy? If this is normal, how do I get the listings for other series such as Jefferson nickels and Franklin halves?
It is completely normal. To cover every coin you need both an A and a B issue plus the quarterly supplements.
Go for the monthly issues, they are the best for type, that is complete sets of (for example) Barber dimes, mercs, etc.
Here's what's listed on their website: Code: Coin Dealer Newsletter - Greysheet 4/18/2008 $3.99 CDN Monthly Supplement 4/2008 $3.99 CDN Quarterly Part I 4/2008 $4.99 CDN Quarterly Part II 2/2008 $4.99 CDN Quarterly Part III 3/2008 $4.99 Certified Coin Dealer Newsletter - Bluesheet 4/18/2008 $3.99 Currency Dealer Newsletter - Greensheet 4/2008 $4.99 Which one do I need to get the listings for Jefferson Nickels and Franklin halves?
When you click on the links above, go to "whats covered". I am pretty sure you want the Monthly Supplement.
Got it. Thanks. Another question: when talking price with a dealer, how much above the "ask" price should I start with?
I get the monthly, it only covers Frankies in AU and above, and no Jeff's except a few keys and proof singles...... start at bid generally then bargain, or better yet, start behind bid.....in other words, always start low
Try this. 1. Get the CDN Ask price (think of it as the wholesale price.) 2. Get the Coin World or PCGS price (think of it as the retail price.) 3. Check with the eBay winning bids (think of it as a sanity check.) You want to be lower than 2. Best estimate, halfway between 1. and 2. (But you'll probably end up closer to 2.)
As quoted from the grey sheet front page at the bottom " INVESTOR/COLLECTOR NOTE: The prices in this newsletter are from Dealer-to-Dealer transactions; you should expect to pay a premium above Ask when purchasing coins in a retail transaction; you may also commission a Dealer for your purchase." Needless to say. Support your dealer.
Are you selling or buying ? The difference bewteen the two can be up to 40%. When buying you start with what the dealer is asking and forget everything else. He doesn't care what it says in the Grey Sheet - he wants what he wants period. When selling you basically do the same thing - he offers what he offers. The only thing you use the Grey Sheet for is to be able to tell how close his offer, be it buy or sell, is to what is listed and thus decide if you are willing to accept it.
