Hi, I am new to this forum. I have read through many, many threads to find the answer to my question with no luck, so I guess I have to ask...What is the best photo-grading book available to grade uncirculated Morgan dollars? I don't think "Photograde" (Ruddy) gets into unc. too much and no one seems to know much about "The Grading Guide" (Halperin.) I have researched amazon and my local bookstore for help, especially about "The Official ANA Grading Standards for U.S. Coins, but can't find out much about the books without buying them. I don't want to get stuck with a book that doesn't have what I am looking for. I have quite a few unc. Morgans that I bought over twenty years ago from an old-time dealer in my town (now deceased.) He made no distinction between MS grades, as there probably wasn't any back in his day. I know that they are all better than MS60, but what distinguishes between MS62,63,64... Currently I compare the coins to certified NGC and PCGS Morgans that I own, but there has to be a better way. Thanks for your help.

I would get the ANA guide....the OLD ANA guide...the new one is out but many old collectors don't like it...it shows how people are grading today and they have changed alot since the last book--I'm going to stay with the old...

You've answered your own question. The Halperin book and the ANA Grading guides are both excellent for learning how to grade MS coins. The Halperin book there is no need to buy though - it's available for free on-line - How to Grade US Coins - click here

You can find the ANA Grading Guide by - Clicking Here

Just for the record - don't settle for just one book on this subject. It is best to read and use them all. You may also want to check out the NGC and the PCGS grading guides.

Which old one Speedy ? There have been 5 previous editions - and every single one of them is different than the preceeding edition.

Sorry about that...I'm staying with the 5th editions...it seems to me that it is a good grading guide...

??...have you ever seen the NGC guide...I can't stand it...its more of a POP report than anything...
