I'm just curious. Has anyone had any experience sending in coins for grading that are recent issue proofs/uncirculated coins from the mint that they wish to share? My thoughts are that the many coins I have purchased from the mint in recent years all seem to be in pretty much fantastic condition. While I am not an expereinced grader, the majorityl seem to be between 68/69 quality when I do comparisons at coin shows. I wonder if the majority of these coins are actually being graded 68/69. Of course I do not have the benefit of using microscopic comparisons and maybe that is where I am misjudging the grade of my coins. Any comments?

I first posted this on one of the other forums and did not get any responses so I apologize to those who are having to read this twice. However, it was buried in another thread.
    Thanks,

Coins from annual Mint sets will rarely grade MS67 or higher, most of them will receive grades of MS65 with a smaller number receiving grades of MS66. Coins from annual Proof sets commonly grade PF68, with a smaller number grading PF67 or less and PF69. Very few are graded as 70's.

Coins from the modern commemorative series are typically given much better handling by the mint and the unc versions often grade MS68 with fewer numbers grading 69 and very few grading 70. The Proof versions often grade as 69 with fewer as 68 or lower and very few as 70's.

Now, you must also understand that the vast majority of all of these coins are pre-selected & pre-graded by those submitting them and only the best specimens are submitted. That is why the population reports of the grading companies seem to biased to the higher end of the scale.

Thanks GDJMSP for the response. Pretty much confirms what I suspected for the proofs and commemoratives. I agree that the annual mint sets do seem to have lower quality strikings overall and I probably should not have included them in my original statement for the 68-69 range. I have to admit that I can see very little difference in the 68-69 range and can find no difference for the 69-70 range for the top grading companies. I know a lot of people are paying a premium for the higher graded coins, but makes me wonder if it makes sense to pay the extra money for the highest grades for these recent releases. Especially if one is a collector versus an investor.

bama guy - I think what GDJMSP is saying is that since the majority of the coins submitted are pre-graded, only the best ones are sent in for "formal" grading. Thus the high end percentages for the grades. No one wants to send in coins they believe will be graded out at a low grade due to the grading costs. I think that is the point unless I am way off base.

What started my question was a post you made about possibly submitting your ASE sets. I was just thinking what if the majority of these sets are graded 68/69. Does it make sense to send them in if you know/believe that this will be the assigned grade?

That is the way i look at it, unless you are ready to role the dice and hope for a 70. somehow i do not feel that luck . 100 bucks for the set and about that for grading. somehow this 1 and 1 doesn't add up to me. I like the information furnished by GD and with your explantion also dragon. This might explain why you do not see many/any slabbed 68 offered by dealers on the modern comms. Hey I just thought of something. These raw sets you buy from dealer have all probably been cherry picked . Take back ever bad thing i have said about the mint well most of them anyhow . unrelated question but how do you set a tab on a post in here . want to do a paragraph every now and then

I just got back 22 different modern unc one dollar comm. from anacs. I sent them in their original containers from the mint. 6 came back MS70, 14 MS69 and 2 MS68...What does that tell you...I don't know.

It tells me what I have known for some time - ANACS has really loosened up their gradijng standards. By the way, what commem was it ?

If you had sent those Comm's back before July I would be pretty sure that NONE would have come back as 70---and few as 69.

If I had the funds, I would pay travel arrangements for twenty people from this forum to get together. Once assembled, I would present them with 100 coins. Fifty would have been certified MS-70 and 50 would have been certified MS-69. I would ask them to distinguish between the coins, and I'll bet that the results would be no different than if the coins were randomly sorted.

I think the ANACS coins in the old holders will be worth more in the future than the coins in the new holders because of the change in grading standards.

I would agree with you. But I would bet that there several people on this forum who would get say 90% of them right. But just for the sake of curiosity, what slabbing company or companies would you use ?

You are right! Of the most vocal, probably few of these experts have ever owned a PR/MS 70 coin!
