I know that PCGS and NGC will crack coins out of questionable holders for you and grade the coins. I'm happy they will do this. It would be a big time saver for me. This is my question. Will the graders ever see the old slab or the opinion the questionable other service gave the coins? I would think the coins go to the grading room as raw with no information about the old slab.
I cannot answer this directly. I will say that in my office if I have to create an estimate for a project that someone in my office previously had done, I will not view the previous estimate because I know that it can’t help but to create a bias in my work going forward…. I would have to believe that professional graders would feel the same.
In the vast majority of cases the graders only see the coins raw. But, there are a couple of exceptions. One would be if you request a cross-over; the other is when you specify a minimum grade. Do either of those things and the graders will the coin in the slab in which it arrived.
