Boy GDJMSP sure is tough!!! I think that NGC would grade it AU 50. PCGS would grade it EF 40 or 45. To me this is a classic XF/AU slider. There is still luster left, but the coin is weakly struck on the reverse and shows clear wear on the devices. No matter the grade, this is an eye appealing Indian Eagle that I'd be proud to own...Mike
There's a lot of wear on that coin, that I believe would prevent it from grading an xf grade. The detail on the hair is almost non-existant in parts, and there is about 1/2 or less of the feather details present. I think a vf grade is right.
Well Leadfoot you and I seldom differ too much when it comes to grading. But in this case I think you are attributing too much to the remaining luster and thinking it's a weakly struck coin instead of a coin with a lot of wear. I can understand that, even thought about it for a minute myself at first glance. But look again and just ignore the remaining luster. See all those hits in virtually every square centimeter of the coin. Some of them are large, some of them are quite small. But hits like that, especially that many, are due to circulation, and a good bit of it. So no, I don't think that is weakly struck coin - I think that's a VF coin. You are of course entitled to your own differing opinion
I think we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one. Indian Eagles are always banged up, even in mint state. The remaining luster makes this an EF coin to me. Regardless of what it grades, I'm sure we both agree that this is a great coin and I, for one, would be proud to own it...Mike
