This coin is one of my early coin collecting blunders. I admit that I am terrible in grading Washington Quarters. I need help with this coin. First, is it even real, I bought it raw on E-Bay. Second, if we think it is genuine, what is the grade AU/BU. Third, I am almost positive that it has been dipped, but has it also been lightly cleaned and what are the chances that it will body bag if submitted for grading.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

BTW, sorry about the terrible photos, the coin presently resides in an capital plastics holder and I did not remove it to take the photos. Hence they suck. If I have time, I will take new photos later and post.

It looks real to me. I'd grade it MS-63, and yes, I think PCGS would body-bag it as cleaned.

I never understood that comment, by anyone.
If cleaned, how could it be anything but unc? (without a number).

It look real to me, but (as always) I have been wrong before).

I'd go (can't tell the luster) but if the luster is there, the way that I think, AU-55 or perhaps a touch better.

I would call it AU58...and I think it would slab.
Most 1932-S quarters have been dipped or cleaned at some point in time. Just watch the market some and you will note that alot have been cleaned.
I've got a nice AU55 in an NGC slab that has been dipped one too many times.

Can you get a few more shots with the lighting at different places so we can see different shots, and maybe the detail, and luster better.

Looks mint state to me from the photos.
Think it will come back as altered surfaces at PCGS.
Then again, PCGS does show some latitude with this issue (as Speedy correctly points out)...MIke

I'll say MS-63, a high possibility of it being dipped? Is it the pictures, or does the obverse look different than the reverse like it does in the pics? The obverse looks washed out, while the reverse has good luster IMHO. I think it'll slab though, but I'm no expert. Nice coin though, I like it. :thumb:

That is the reason I would like to see more shots of this coin.
The Ovb. looks fine---UNC and nice luster. The Rev. is where I think it might show some wear. On the tips of the wings...the eagels legs, and the tops of the leaves.

I agree AU details. Also agree with altered surfaces. But what bothers me even more is this - see pic. What's going on with the bottom of the neck. Almost looks like the coin has been repaired.

Could be putty, silver, solder - could be anything. But it looks like something was done there.

It looks AU to me. Sliders of these can look so close to MS they can fool you, so I could be wrong. Personally, I do not see signs of cleaning. If you tilt the coin under a pin point light source, do you see lots of hairlines across both fields and devices? Whence the altered surfaces? Does someone think the right obv field was whizzed?

Is it real? It looks pretty good- does the mintmark have nice high relief, or does it look thin? Is there a die line above the D in Dollar? (helps if it is there, but it was only on one die). Any sign of a filled hole in the edge (embossed MM)?

    Frank:

I don't think I understand your question, but here goes.

I said that personally, I would grade it MS-63, but that I think PCGS would body bag it as cleaned. I don't think that PCGS would allow for the obverse color. It's kinda gray, except for an area from about 9 o'clock to 11:30 where there is some toning. IMHO, it looks to me like the obverse of the coin has at one time been cleaned to remove some toning, due to the washed out color. I don't think that this feature would pass PCGS' muster. They can be tremendously fussy at times.

I, on the other hand, can overlook a light, non-abrasive cleaning if not done too harshly. I consider the coin to still be in the Mint State grades and graded it MS-63 accordingly. I hope that explained what you were asking about.

as for the repair issue that Doug raises, I would have to see the coin in hand in order to determine something like this. Photos can be deceiving both positively and negatively.

How about we try this exercise again with new improved photos.

    What is the grade?
    Has it been cleaned?
Should I just list on E-Bay (no reserve) and see what happens?

    AU-55/58 details

    Has it been cleaned?
    Yes

Should I just list on E-Bay (no reserve) and see what happens?
Just how am I supposed to answer this? Do you need money? Do you need room? It is still a nice coin.

I don't need money, I have too many coins, but I don't really want to lose hundreds on this coin. If I list it on E-Bay someone else might pay BU money for it.

I think you should take photos showing its luster and/or general "shinyness" and post it on eBay.

I am not sure what it means to you loss column, but I would be surprised if you would get unc money for it if you listed it raw. Just look at the counterfeit, altered, cleaned coins, etc. reported here. Even if yours isn't, bidders always must bid with that possibility. Now if it certifies, I would think your would be as well or better off to sell it on eBay. Not sure just what to say if it comes back "GENUINE".
